Created by Phil Zimmerman in 1991, Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) is a data encryption and decryption computer software that provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communication. In other words, PGP is used for signing, encrypting and decrypting texts, e-mails, files, directories and whole disk partitions to increase the security of e-mail communications. PGP combines symmetric-key encryption and public-key encryption. The message is encrypted using a symmetric encryption algorithm, which requires a symmetric or session key. Each symmetric key is used only once. The message and its session key are sent to the receiver. The session key must be sent to the receiver so they know how to decrypt the message. To protect the session key during transmission, it is encrypted with the receiver’s public key. Only the private key belonging to the receiver can decrypt the sender’s session key. PGP is useful for two things: Privacy and Security Authenticity. For example, you can encrypt an email to someone, or encrypt a file with a list of passwords. You can also be certain that the message you receive was sent/written by the legitimate sender and that it has not been modified by a third party.
Why there is need for Blackberry PGP Encryption?
People often think the email they send on their BlackBerry doesn't require encryption because it doesn't contain sensitive information. But "nothing to hide" is not the same thing as "nothing to lose". Standard email is, in fact, a very insecure means of sending information because you send your message as plain text. Wireless communication on a mobile device, such as a BlackBerry, is that much less secure without an additional layer of security. Messages are not difficult to intercept when they are not encrypted by default. Instead, they are sent as plain, readable text, so any third party is able to read an intercepted email without the sender or recipient knowing. File attachments, such as photos, are also unencrypted when sent from your BlackBerry without Strong PGP Email Service, and are easy to view if intercepted. For the same reason mail is sent in envelopes, to prevent anyone from reading the content, email on your BlackBerry should be secured with PGP encryption to protect it from prying eyes. Our PGP BlackBerry encryption service, using strong PGP encryption, serves exactly this purpose.
Who uses PGP Blackberry Encryption?
Many individuals and organizations, from private/public companies to government bodies, have recognized the importance of email security and are using PGP systems. BlackBerry devices offer good support for PGP and are a common mobile device solution for individuals and business seeking an encryption solution.
How secure is our PGP encryption?
The current version of PGP employed by Strong PGP offers true end-to-end “military grade” encryption. The algorithms utilized are not publicly known to have any cryptanalytic weaknesses. Current technology combines public/private key cryptography with digital signature authentication plus an added level of security with user generated pass phrases. There is no “back door” vulnerability associated with PGP.
As Edward Snowden, former NSA/CIA intelligence analyst and whistle blower said "Encryption works. Properly implemented strong crypto systems are one of the few things that you can rely on.”
